18ne-hundred-sixty years agoJapan and France cametogether to sign the 1858 Treaty ofAmity and Commerce, and thisyear the two countries are celebratingthe country-wide culture festival,Japonismes 2018: les âmes enrésonance.The event, centered in Paris,spans 100 cities across France, whichwill hold festivals from July untilFebruary 2019. Exhibitions, performingarts, audiovisual, and art de vivrecategories will offer over 50 titles.“Usually when we say Japonism,we are referring to the 19th centuryUkiyo-e boom. However, for thefestival, we’re using it as anintroduction to Japanese art.” —Tsutomu Sugiura, the President ofthe Japan Cultural Institute in Paris(The Japan Foundation).It’s exciting that such an opportunityisn’t available in Japan.
