21Born in 1959. Graduated from the Faculty of Science, Saitama University, in 1981, and received his PhD in physics from the University of Tokyo in 1986. He was involved in research into neutrinos from his days as a graduate student, taking part in the original Kamiokande project and in the construction and operation of Super-Kamiokande.
