METI Minister Miyazawa and State Minister Takagi Had Meetings with Chief Minister Naidu of the State Government of Andhra Pradesh, India

On July 7 and 8, 2015, Mr. Yoichi Miyazawa, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. Yosuke Takagi, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry had meetings with Mr. Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of the State Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP), India. At the meeting, based on the Memorandum of Cooperation concluded in November 2014, they welcomed the progress made in the development of a new AP state capital and the project for ultra-supercritical thermal power plants, and agreed to further strengthen cooperation between the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japanese companies, and AP.

1. Background

The geographical importance of AP as a gateway into Southeast Asia and even the wider Asia-Pacific region, and the excellent leadership of Chief Minister Naidu have drawn the attention of Japanese companies to AP, and such attention has rapidly increased. In November 2014, Minister Miyazawa and Chief Minister Naidu concluded a memorandum related to the promotion of the development of a new AP state capital, the development of infrastructure, and industrial cooperation including in the manufacturing and agricultural industries. In response to this, in January 2015, State Minister Takagi visited Hyderabad, had meetings with Chief Minister Naidu and H.E. Mr. S. Iswaran, Second Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore, and agreed to continue the construction of the new AP state capital and the cooperation between Japan, AP, and Singapore. In April 2015, Minister Miyazawa visited India and hand delivered Japanese proposals about the development of the new AP state capital to Chief Minister Naidu.

2. This visit to Japan

This time, Minister Miyazawa and State Minister Takagi individually had meetings with Chief Minister Naidu and followed up on past efforts. Chief Minister Naidu expressed his appreciation for the enthusiastic past efforts of Japan and welcomed the progress made in the development of the new AP state capital and the project for ultra-supercritical thermal power plants at both meetings.

In addition, Chief Minister Naidu expressed his expectations for further investments related to the new AP state capital from the Japanese government and companies. In response to this, Minister Miyazawa and State Minister Takagi expressed their active support for these investments, and requested the improvement of the environment to facilitate the participation of Japanese companies. At both meetings, they agreed to further strengthen cooperation between METI, Japanese companies, and AP.
